A Place Apart: Soweto, a suburb to the south of Johannesburg, is one of South Africa’s most famous townships. A key symbol in the fight against apartheid, and still bearing the marks of unrest, it is a place where history looms large. But it’s a history that is being turned on its head – a fact no more apparent than on the day of the Soweto derby, between the Orlando Pirates and the Kaizer Chiefs. This series of images, shot in December last year, seeks to capture the fever and excitement of an intense rivalry that has the ability to at once divide and unite a community, and stop a township in its tracks.
